Root Canal Therapy & Retreatment in Bakersfield, CA

At the center of our teeth is a soft area filled with pulp and nerves that are responsible for the health of the tooth. It pulls nutrients up from the body in order to keep the tooth healthy and alive. However, when the root area is put at risk due to a cavity or trauma allowing bacteria to get to the pulp, an infection and inflammation of the area can occur. When this happens, the health of the entire tooth is put in jeopardy.

Signs You Need Root Canal Treatment

Symptoms that indicate a root canal issue:

  • A bump/pimple/abscess on the gums
  • Severe tooth pain (can be consistent or just when biting down)
  • Swelling or tenderness of the gums
  • Sensitivity to cold and hot foods or beverages

Root Canal Treatment

The only way to save the tooth is through root canal therapy. During the process, your root canal dentist will remove a portion of the cap of the tooth in order to fully clean out and remove the pulp and nerve endings at the center of the tooth. Once removed, the area is thoroughly sanitized and sealed in order to prevent reinfection. A dental crown is used to replace the top portion of the tooth, help it regain its strength and protect the center of the tooth.

Endodontic therapy is very successful for many of our patients, but in rare cases, a further complication can occur. Some patients think they have to suffer in silence since they already had a root canal, but endodontic retreatment is always an option. Helping to keep the natural tooth viable is always more desirable to extraction and replacing the tooth.
